Alice Johnson, vigorously supported by Kim Kardashian, Pardon by Trump and introduced at State of the Union

Former prisoner, Alice Marie Johnson, who was granted mercy by President Donald Trump in 2018 after he was urged by Kim Kardashian West, became visibly emotional at the State of the Union on Tuesday.

Johnson, the American convicted drug trafficker, a #SOTU guest of the president’s for the Tuesday night speech, wiped away tears as lawmakers in both parties gave her a standing ovation.

While discussing a bipartisan criminal justice reform bill, the First Step Act, which was passed at the end of last year, Trump introduced his SOTU guest, Johnson, a prisoner whose sentence he commuted in June the same year.
 
Kim Kardashian West had worked with Johnson's legal team and took a personal meeting with President Trump at the White House to get Johnson's sentence for a non-violent drug offense lowered. And after some pressure from reality star, Trump order her release from prison.

"Alice’s story underscores the disparities and unfairness that can exist in criminal sentencing and the need to remedy this total injustice," Trump said in his speech.

"In June, I commuted Alice’s sentence," he added. "When I saw Alice’s beautiful family greet her at the prison gates, hugging and kissing and crying and laughing, I knew I did something right. Alice is with us tonight and she is a terrific woman."

The 63-year-old great-grandmother was serving a life sentence on nonviolent drug and money laundering charges.

The president and first lady also brought Matthew Charles, the first prisoner freed due to the First Step Act, to the State of the Union.
