In what has been one of the most talked-about transfer sagas of the summer, Chelsea’s pursuit of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen appears to be faltering. This time, it's not about the transfer fee, but the wages.
Chelsea fans were buzzing earlier this week when reports surfaced that the Blues had re-entered the race for Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian striker, long admired by the Chelsea board, was reportedly the subject of advanced talks between Stamford Bridge officials and Napoli, sparking renewed hope of finally landing a world-class forward.

Despite progress in discussions, Chelsea have now cooled their interest, and it's all down to Osimhen’s wage demands.
Sources close to the club say the striker’s asking salary of €12 million per year is simply too high for a club trying to rebuild within a structured financial model. While Chelsea steps back, Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal has stepped forward. The Riyadh-based club has reportedly submitted a €65 million bid plus €5 million in add-ons to Napoli and is already in talks with Osimhen over personal terms.
Given the Saudi Pro League’s freedom with salary structures, Al Hilal is seen as a front-runner to secure the Nigerian star's signature.
With Osimhen likely off the table, Chelsea is turning their attention to younger and more affordable options. Names like Liam Delap, Viktor Gyökeres, and Hugo Ekitike are now rising to the top of the shortlist.
Each of these targets fits the club’s new transfer policy: young, high-potential, and cost-effective with room for resale value and long-term impact.
Victor Osimhen might have been the dream signing for Chelsea fans, but the reality of modern football finance makes that dream a difficult one to realize. With the Blues opting for sustainability over splurging, this summer could be more about smart moves than star names.
