Borno Government Suspends Councillor For Allegedly 'Disrespecting' Local Council Chairman On Social Media

The Borno State Government has suspended Mele Mohammed, the Councillor representing Yawa Kura in Abadam Local Government Area, over alleged misconduct on social media. According to an official letter signed by Bashir Goni Sanda, Acting Director of Local Government Affairs on behalf of the Commissioner, obtained by SaharaReporters, the suspension follows Mohammed’s public disrespect of the Executive Chairman of Abadam Local Government, Malam Fatori, through social media platforms — an action described as a violation of existing laws governing the conduct of public officials. The letter, which was also copied to the Executive Chairman, stated that the suspension will remain in effect pending the outcome of further investigations into the matter. Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has disclosed that social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM) was arrested by police officers at a Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) branch in Abuja. Adeyanju confirmed the arrest in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, following concerns raised by VDM’s associate, Koko Pee, who sounded the alarm on Instagram over his sudden disappearance after accompanying his mother to the bank. Prior to his arrest, VDM had revealed that he accompanied his mother to GTBank to address “unauthorised withdrawals from her account”. He claimed the deductions were labeled as "loan repayments," despite his mother never taking any loans. VDM also shared the purported screenshots showing the debit alerts.
